Texas Instruments has introduced a hex level translator for logic that can also be used as a line-driver.

Called SN74LV6T17-EP and part of the LVxT logic family, it contains six independent buffers with Schmitt-trigger inputs.

The output level is referenced to the supply voltage, which can span 1.6 to 5.5V and supports 1.8, 2.5, 3.3 and 5V cmos levels.

The input is designed with a lower than usual threshold to support up-translation for lower voltage CMOS inputs – for example, 1.2Vin to 1.8Vout, or 1.8Vin to 3.3Vout.

As the inputs are 5V-tolerant, they enable down-translation – for example, 3.3Vin to 2.5Vout.

The complete list is: 1.2-1.8V, 1.5-2.5V, 1.8-3.3V, 3.3-5V, then 5, 3.3 or 2.5 to 1.8V, 5 or 3.3 to 2.5V, or 5 to 3.3V.

With supplies of 3.3 to 5V, ±15mA can be delivered at the output, dropping with voltage down to ±3mA with supplies of 1.6 to 2V.

Switching us up to 150Mbit/s when running at 5 or 3.3V.

Driving transmission lines is one possible application.

According to TI: “SN74LV6T17-EP can be used to drive signals over relatively long traces or transmission lines. In order to reduce ringing caused by impedance mismatches between the driver, transmission line, and receiver, a series damping resistor placed in series with the transmitter’s output can be used. = just a small amount of resistance can make a significant impact on signal integrity in this type of application.”
