Police in Newtown are issuing a warning to drivers in the area over a malfunctioning railroad gate.

Officers are reminding people that going around railroad gates is not only dangerous, but also a crime.

The crossing is located at Church Street and Short Park Road, next to Miami Valley Christian Academy.

Newtown police said sometimes, the gate malfunctions, causing the lights to flash. The gates do not go all the way down or come back up after the train passes.

Police are working with the railroad to make sure they are notified every time a train passes through.

At this time, no timeline has been given for when the railroad could be fixed. Police said they are focused on educating drivers, but also said a ticket for going around the gates comes with a mandatory court date.
